ABC — Aggregate Base Course — is a blend of crushed stone, stone dust, and fines that, when properly compacted, creates an extremely firm and stable base. It is the industry-standard foundation material for driveways, parking lots, and paved roads in North Carolina.

Because ABC interlock-compacts tightly, it resists rutting and washout far better than plain gravel. It is typically placed in 4–6 inch lifts and compacted with a plate compactor or roller. Most NCDOT road base specifications call for ABC.

Common uses
  • Driveway base
  • Parking lot base
  • Road sub-base
  • Foundation base for structures
How much will I need?

A 4-inch layer over 1,000 sq ft needs roughly 15 tons. Driveways typically need 8–30 loads.
